Caistor

A West Lindsey market town nestled on the hillside along the Viking Way in the Lincolnshire Wolds, once a Roman fortress.

Nestling on a hillside at the northern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, Caistor is just a 40-minute drive from Lincoln. With its quaint marketplace, fringed by quirky independent shops and cafes, it is one of three Lincolnshire Wolds ‘Walkers are Welcome’ towns, as it lies on the Viking Way.

Caistor has its origins in a Roman Army ‘Castra’. Look closely and you will see how the narrow streets still follow the layout of the original military camp. The Romans occupied Lincolnshire for over three centuries and built many forts across the county, including at; Ancaster, Caistor, Lincoln, Louth, Stamford and Tattershall.

Caistor’s market square lies at the heart of a conservation area that contains 56 - mainly Grade II - listed buildings, making it one of Lincolnshire’s most important conservation areas. The imposing Georgian houses were built when Caistor was a major centre for the Wool Trade and hosted large sheep markets.

  • Market: Every Saturday
  • Evening Street Food Market: 1st Wednesday of the month, 3.30 p.m. – 8.00 pm

Caistor Arts and Heritage Centre is situated in a renovated Methodist chapel, which accommodates the local library and heritage timeline and a cafe where lovely food, cake and drinks are served daily. A few fragments of the 4th-century Roman walls remain today.

There are also many fishing lakes to explore including Wold View Fishery and Caistor Lakes and Leisure Park— famed for its multi-award-winning restaurant.

Nearby are the villages of Nettleton, with its Ironstone mining history, The Salutation pub and glamping pods, some tea rooms and interior design shops.

Grasby has the lovely All Saints Church and Claxby offers The Viking Centre, a reasonably-priced self-catering hostel for 20 walkers of The Viking Way.
