You will find a wealth of towns and villages scattered around Lincolnshire. The cathedral city of Lincoln may sit at the heart of the county, but the surrounding countryside is full of hidden treasures.
Settlements in Lincolnshire can be traced back to the stone age, so many of the towns and villages here are steeped in history. Throughout the years, these rural regions have nurtured pioneers, trailblazers, and innovators – not to mention rebels and rapscallions!
Head into the Lincolnshire Wolds and you’ll discover picturesque villages, and vibrant market towns. From antique hunting in Horncastle, to sampling local produce in Louth, you'll find an abundance of things to do in the Wolds. Walking trails and cycling routes make it easy to explore; head off the beaten track and you’ll discover historic architecture, beautiful scenery – and plenty of country pubs.
In the south of the county, you’ll find three of Lincolnshire’s finest stately homes: Belton House, Burghley House and Belvoir Castle. These grand estates are bordered by charming market towns like Stamford, Spalding and Bourne.
Across the county, you’ll find even more historic houses, with Grimsthorpe Castle, Gainsborough Old Hall and Doddington Hall all nestled within the hidden towns and villages of Lincolnshire.
The grand historic houses around Lincolnshire are a testament to the success of past residents. The whole county is laced with industrial, aviation and farming heritage. Many of the towns here were once home to industry leaders; the tank, the caterpillar track and the turbojet engine were all developed in Lincolnshire.
You can delve further into the county’s industrial past by visiting towns like Boston, Scunthorpe and Grantham. This unassuming market town is best known as the birthplace of two notable figures: Margaret Thatcher and Isaac Newton. Pay a visit to Woolsthorpe Manor and you can see the apple tree that started it all!

Stamford
