Bailgate

One of the most picturesque areas in Lincoln, Bailgate sits at the heart of the Cathedral Quarter. Just a stone’s throw away from the city’s most famous attractions, this historic area is well worth exploring.

Situated just off Castle Square, at the top of Steep Hill, Bailgate is one long street, connecting the medieval Cathedral to the Roman-built Newport Arch.  As this area is where the Romans first settled back in 50AD, Bailgate runs roughly along where the original Roman road would’ve been.

Today, Bailgate is home to some fantastic independent shops, as well as a great selection of cafes, bars and restaurants. As there are so many local businesses here, the area has a real community spirit and you can expect a very warm welcome.

If you’re keen to stay in the heart of historic Lincoln, you will find some great accommodation in the Bailgate area. The White Hart Hotel and the Lincoln Hotel are just a stone’s throw from the Cathedral; the Tower Hotel and the Castle Hotel boast award-winning restaurants; 31 & 32 Bailgate provide the perfect self-catering space for families.

As Lincoln Castle and Cathedral host events all year round, there is always something to see and do close by. Visit during the spring or summer months and you’ll feel an excited buzz in the air, with pop-up events, live music and carriage rides in Castle Square.

Throughout autumn, the setting sun illuminates the historic architecture, transforming Lincoln Cathedral into a golden beacon - the perfect backdrop to the city's famous Ghost Walk.

During Christmas, Bailgate sits at the heart of the celebrations. With beautiful window displays, pretty lights and roasting chestnuts, you’ll feel like you’ve walked into a Dickensian novel.
