Market Rasen

Market Rasen is a picturesque market town, situated on the western edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds.  Just 30 minutes’ drive from Lincoln, this historic town is the perfect destination for a day trip from the city.

Known locally as ‘Rasen’, this picturesque town is rich in heritage. Although the area dates back to pre-Roman times, it was first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086. There are some fascinating stories to discover here, and some beautiful historic buildings.

The town is centered around a cobbled market place, and a market has been held here since 1219. Centuries ago, the market would have been buzzing with farmers and livestock. You would find everything from coal, crops and cows on offer, and people would flock to Market Rasen to trade their wares.

Today, Market Rasen is still a great spot to source some Lincolnshire produce. Markets take place every month, and the High Street is home to an abundance of local, independent businesses. Many of these are long-standing, family-run companies, handed down through the generations.

Aside from its vibrant town centre, Market Rasen is perhaps best known for being home to the only racecourse in the county. The Market Rasen Racecourse runs an annual programme of racing fixtures, and is also a popular concert venue.

Walkers Welcome

Due to its location, Market Rasen is a hotspot for walkers and cyclists. From the town centre, you can easily walk into the Lincolnshire Wolds, and there are a series of walking routes and cycling trails to follow.

The Viking Way runs through Market Rasen, so local villages like Tealby and Walesby are easily accessible. One of the prettiest villages in Lincolnshire, Tealby is home to the King's Head, the oldest thatched pub in Lincolnshire. Head to Walesby and you can take a look at the All Saints ‘ Ramblers’ Church. Steeped in history, this beautiful medieval church offers spectacular views across the Wolds.

Lincolnshire Limewoods and Willingham Woods are also both within walking distance of Market Rasen. You will find a variety of walking trails here, with something to suit all abilities. With ancient woodland, stunning scenery and a wealth of wildlife, these peaceful walking routes are particularly picturesque during autumn.
