The Church of St Paul in the Bail

This is the site of one of Lincoln’s earliest churches possibly dating back to the end of the Roman occupation in the 4th century.

You will see an open space with the outline of a building on the ground surrounded by seats and plants near the Roman well and Forum.

The first church on this site was built of timber and the outline of the second church, the first stone church, can be seen on the ground. The eastern end of the chancel was round with a screen dividing it from the nave.
