RAF Skellingthorpe Memorials

RAF Skellingthorpe Memorials

Close to the A46 bypass is the Birchwood estate, which occupies most of the former site of RAF Skellingthorpe.

This World War II bomber base was home to several famous squadrons including: 50 Sqn, 455 Sqn (RAAF), 61 Sqn, 619 Sqn and 463 Sqn.

During the first 1,000 bomber raids in May 1942 F/O Leslie Manser was awarded a posthumous VC whilst flying a Manchester bomber from RAF Skellingthorpe.  The Leslie Manser Primary School on Kingsdown Road was named after the VC winner who was based at RAF Skellingthorpe.

Many roads on the Birchwood estate (ex-RAF Skellingthorpe) are named after famous airfields of Lincolnshire and across the UK.

RAF Skellingthorpe has two memorial sites: a museum in Birchwood Leisure Centre (Birchwood Avenue, LN6 0JE) and the Heritage Room, near Skellingthorpe Village Community Centre.
