Free things to do in Lincoln

Discover Lincolnshire in March with a weekend of free entry to many of Lincoln city and countryside's attractions, plus other free activities and special offers - part of English Tourism Week.

As well as enjoying the shopping and food available throughout Lincoln, visitors and residents alike can also explore some of the county's most fascinating attractions offer free activities or admission to help you discover Lincolnshire for yourself.

Highlights include free rides on Lincoln's open-top tour bus, free entry to Lincoln Cathedral, and free guided tours of the city.

There are many other attractions across the city that are free to enter all year long too. Discover Lincolnshire Weekend is part of English Tourism Week: an annual celebration of the people, places and experiences that help make holidays in England so great.

Industrial Lincoln Guided Tours

Free tours, led by guides from the Society of Lincolnshire History and Archaeology, aiming to re-create the industrial Lincoln of the 19th century. Lincoln expanded at a dizzying rate as the industrial revolution transformed the City from a county town with a population of 7,000 in 1800 to an industrial city with a population of 50,000 by the end of the century.

Tours take place on Saturday 30th at 10:30am and Sunday 31st at 2pm. Please meet outside Jews Court (2/3 Steep Hill) for the free, hour long tour.

Jew's Court

There will be free guided visits of the medeival Jew's Court at the foot of Steep Hill on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st.

A short introductory talk and display of images will take place at 10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm on both days. Please book your visit in advance by calling 01522 521337. The history book shop selling new and second-hand books will also be open on both days.

Jewish History Tour of Lincoln

Discover the history and heritage of Jewish Lincoln on a free guided walking tour. The tour will explore the life and times of famous Jews in Lincoln through 1,000 years of history, exploring the links that still exist to this day for Lincoln's Jewish community.

Tours take place Saturday 30th at 1:30pm and Sunday 31st at 1:30pm. Please meet outside the Lincoln Visitor Information Centre. To book your free place, please contact Dorothy Moss on 01522 692738.

Lincoln Castle

Join a tour of the Lincoln Castle grounds for free on Saturday 30th or Sunday 31st at 11am, 12pm, 1:30pm and 2:30pm (usually included in Day Admission Ticket).

The Medieval Walls, Victorian Prison, and Magna Carta vault are also open but normal admission is still valid.

Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum

Free admission to the Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st from 10am to 4pm, with refreshments available on Sunday.

A free classic bus service will be available on Sunday linking the museum with Lincoln city centre and other local attractions – timetable to be confirmed, please see our website nearer the time.

Medieval Lincoln Guided Tours

Join this free tour, led by guides from the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology, to find out more about Lincoln’s lost medieval heritage. For example, did you know that the High Street was once known as Mikelgate, that there were Parchment Makers just off Steep Hill or that in the fourteenth century Lincoln was a centre of the arms industry? 

Tours take place on Saturday 30th at 12pm and Sunday 31st at 11am. Please meet outside Castle Hill Club, Castle Hill.

Open Top Sightseeing Bus

Take a ride on Lincoln's open-top bus for free to get the best overview of Lincoln in the city - all in under one hour - on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st March. The ride also provides great views of the Cathedral Quarter, Brayford Waterfront, and across the countryside.

The tour picks up and drops off at the stop on St Swithins Square (LN2 1HA).

Free tickets for the top deck are available to book on this page; bottom-deck places will be offered first-come first-serve on the day.

Tours take place every hour from 10:30am to 3:30pm and last around 50 minutes. Unclaimed top-deck tickets will also be offered on the day so arrive early to get the best spot!

Roman Lincoln Guided Tours

Free tours, led by guides from the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology, which aim to bring the Roman city of Lindum Colonia back to life. For 400 years Lincoln was a Roman city. First came the Roman legions, and then Lincoln became an important Colonia, one of the principal centres of Roman Britain. 

Tours take place on Saturday 30th at 2pm and Sunday 31st at 12pm. Please meet at the site of the former church of St Paul's in the Bail (opposite the Lion and Snake pub on Bailgate).
