Navigation House

Navigation House

A unique, Grade II listed canal company office with interactive exhibits detailing the history of travel and trade by canal.

Built in 1838 and Grade II listed, Navigation House is an impressive, original canal company office standing in the old public wharf area of Sleaford, now known as Navigtion Yard. The building is thought to be the only of its kind still in existence and has a heritage theme covering the early development of the River Slea, portaying the river's impact on the town of Sleaford's history.

The construction of the Sleaford Navigation linked the town with the River Witham, providing a way of transporting bulk goods economically for the first time. It promised, and delivered, a sudden rise in Sleaford's importance.

Navigation House has interactive exhibits for all ages showing the history of the building, as well as exhibitions and film footage for those who are fascinated by the history of trade and transport. There is also a small gift shop.

A pleasant walk along the river bank will take you past the National Centre for Craft and Design and to Cogglesford Watermill.
