Cathedral Quarter
John Dawber Garden

John Dawber Garden

A secret walled garden found in The Lawn complex in Lincoln's Cathedral Quarter, featuring a Moon Gate.

The John Dawber Garden includes a sensory area together with areas representative of Lincoln's twin town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Germany, and its Friendship City of Tangshan in China.

The Moon Gate is a traditional feature of Chinese gardens, rising out of the earth, like the moon rises in the sky. A Chinese inscription on the wall translates to: "a sense of the past explains the present and foretells the future".

The garden is located in The Lawn complex based around a former mental health hospital which opened in 1905 and closed in 1985. Today the former hospital is home to offices, a coffee roastery and barista school, a cafe, and a theatre.
