The Lincolnshire flag is flown with pride across the county. You can see it along the coast, out in the countryside and within the city of Lincoln.

The flag was created in 2005, following a competition run by BBC Radio Lincolnshire. Local resident Michelle Andrews designed the winning creation, using four colours to represent four elements of the county.

This colourful flag can be seen flying across the county on Lincolnshire Day, and throughout the year. If you would like your own Lincolnshire flag, head to the Lincoln Visitor Information Centre where you can pick one up to fly at home.

Red

The red cross in the centre represents England. It is taken from the St. George’s Cross, which has been associated with the country since the 13th century. Similar to the flag, the coat of arms for the city of Lincoln also features a red cross and a fleur-de-lys in the centre.

Yellow

Lincolnshire is responsible for 12% of the UK’s produce and farming is the biggest economic industry in the county. The yellow on the flag represents the variety of crops grown across Lincolnshire. It is also a nod to the famous local term “Yellowbelly” - a nickname given to people born and bred in Lincolnshire.

Green

The green in the flag represents the rolling hills and vast fields you can find in the Lincolnshire Wolds and the Fens. The county is famed for its natural landscapes - on a clear day you can see for miles! You are never far away from a beautiful view; even in the heart of the city centre.

Blue

Blue was used to represent the East Coast. The Lincolnshire coast is not only stunning - it is also responsible for producing 70% of the UK’s fish.

The royal blue is also symbolic of Lincolnshire’s famous big skies. The county’s mostly flat topography means that there are often some incredible blue skies to enjoy. The flat land and big skies are also linked to the county’s rich aviation heritage: they create the perfect environment for runways and air traffic control. The trails of the Red Arrows are often seen left behind!

And the Fleur-De-Lis?

The fleur-de-lis is the official symbol of the City of Lincoln. It is featured on its coat of arms and emblazoned across the city. The city’s relationship with this iconic symbol derives from the Diocese of Lincoln, as it is also the symbol for St. Mary, the patron saint of the city and Lincoln Cathedral.
