Recently named Britain’s prettiest street by The Telegraph, Lincoln's Steep Hill is one of the most iconic and historic streets in Lincoln. Dating back to Roman times when Lincoln was known as Lindum Colonia, the hill became a vital route connecting the upper and lower parts of the ancient city.
The Steep Hill first came into use when the Romans expanded the settlement down the hillside. Excavations have shown that the hill was once lined with steps during this period, helping residents move between the lower town and the hilltop settlement. Today, the cobbled hill is packed with independent shops, cafés, and fascinating historic landmarks leading up to the breathtaking Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle.

Our guide to completing the Steep Hill
As you begin your journey up The Strait towards Steep Hill, make sure to stop at Dolci Bakehouse. This popular boutique coffee shop, bakehouse, and gelateria is known for its artisan cakes, authentic Italian gelato and handmade sorbet crafted using traditional Italian techniques. Visitors can also enjoy indulgent milkshakes, delicious bakes stacked with indulgent treats and freshly brewed Italian coffee perfect for picking up a takeaway coffee or matcha to give you slow-release energy for the climb.
As you make your way uphill, you’ll pass Jews' House, one of the oldest and most important medieval domestic buildings in England, strongly linked to Lincoln’s thriving Jewish community during the 12th and 13th centuries. The house is one of only five surviving Medieval Jewish Houses in England and is currently in commercial use homing The Jews House Restaurant and a beauty salon.

Further up the hill sits Medieval Norman House, a remarkable 12th-century building and one of the oldest surviving domestic structures in the UK. It's distinctive arched doorway and double-arched windows reflect classic Norman design, while its historic undercroft once provided secure storage beneath high-status living quarters. Today, it is home to Imperial Teas of Lincoln, an independent shop offering a plethora of loose-leaf teas and specialty coffee blends.
You’ll also spot the iconic “Wonky House” on Michaelgate, another much-loved feature of Lincoln’s historic streetscape.
Once you reach the top, explore even more independent favourites including the recently opened Vines Bakery for freshly baked goods and Rolls Fudge Pantry for delicious handmade sweet treats, perfect options for refueling after your ascent.
Blending Roman heritage, medieval history, independent shopping, and local foodie favourites, Lincoln's Steep Hill is more than just Britain’s prettiest street, it’s one of Lincoln’s top things to do and a must-visit experience for both visitors and locals alike.
