Celebrating Lincoln's Engineering Heritage

Lincoln's most precious engineering masterpiece, Lincoln Cathedral, hosts a celebration of the city's engineering heritage.

Bring your families and take part in have-a-go activities, meet today’s engineers and technologists, and find out about career and study opportunities with world leading organisations based in and around Lincoln. The event will showcase cutting-edge developments in maths, science and technology that are happening across the county right now.

  • The 1215 Magna Carta, an original copy of which is owned by Lincoln Cathedral and held in Lincoln Castle, was the first document known to standardise weights and measures - "There shall be but one Measure throughout the Realm" - leading to engineering as we know it today.
  • Lincoln was at the forefront of the invention of the tank, invented at William Foster engineering company. The Managing Director was William Tritton whose name has been immortalised in one of Lincoln's main roads: Tritton Road. Daphne - one of the Tanks created in Lincoln can be seen at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life
  • The School of Engineering at the University of Lincoln is the first new engineering school in the UK for over 20 years. This innovative project is supported by Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Limited, who have a large site in Lincoln. The Engineering Hub is in the heart of the Univerity's Brayford Campus.
  • The largest integrated circuit was designed in Lincoln by ISDI Ltd.  It measures over 12 cm square (over 200 times larger than the processor in your PC) and a medical imager for use in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Lincoln was home to the world's first ever electricity lit factory.
  • The Statue of Liberty is lit by a Lincoln-made gas turbine.
