At Lincoln Cathedral

The annual Magna Carta lecture at Lincoln Cathedral, in 2017 by Dr Thomas Asbridge who will trace the impact of the 1217 Battle of Lincoln.

The battle, 800 years ago tis year, reshaped the course of English history. It fell to young King Henry III’s regent – the veteran commander and fabled knight William Marshal – to defeat the invading French and their baronial allies, and the decisive encounter played out within Lincoln’s medieval walls.

In this lecture, Dr Thomas Asbridge explains how Marshal led his outnumbered forces to victory and traces the broader impact of these events, from the reissuing of Magna Carta to the birth of English national identity.

Dr Thomas Asbridge is Reader of Medieval History at Queen Mary, University of London. His major published works include The Greatest Knight: The Remarkable Life of William Marshal (2014), The Power Behind Five English Thrones (2015) and The Crusades: The War for the Holy Land (2010). Thomas wrote and presented a BBC Two documentary, The Greatest Knight: William Marshal, and a landmark three-part documentary series The Crusades for BBC Two. He is also the historical consultant behind Lincoln’s Battles & Dynasties exhibition in 2017.

As per tradition Lincoln Cathedral once again hosts the annual Magna Carta lecture as the owner of the document. The annual public lecture aims to raise awareness of the document and give expert insight into its significance in world history. Lincoln is one of only three places in the world where you can see an original 1215 copy of Magna Carta, on display in the subtarraenan David P J Ross Magna Carta Vault in Lincoln Castle
