A selection of iconic costumes from historical films and television in exhibition at the 15th century manor house Gainsborough Old Hall.
The exhibition is exclusive to Gainsborough Old Hall this year following the success of last year's display of costumes from Wolf Hall. The costumes to be displayed are from popular programmes and films such as Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth, Poldark, and Henry V.
These will be the actual costumes as worn by the lead actors – Judi Dench, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kenneth Brannagh. Amongst the 12 costumes on display will also be Helena Bonham Carter's costume from Suffragette which reflects the Centenary of Votes for Women this year.
Other costumes include uniforms worn by Aiden Turner in Poldark and Sean Bean in Sharpe, and a costume worn by Kirstin Scott Thomas from Darkest Hour. Covering a span of time from the 15th Century to the 20th Century these costumes bring to life those films of epic moments of British history both fact and fiction but all have authenticity in common.
Gainsborough Old Hall provides a beautiful and historic backdrop for these costumes and a highlight of a visit to one of the greatest of medieval great Halls. The stunning Hall witnessed each of the periods in history represented by the costumes on display. The costumes are supplied by London costumiers, Angels who make costumes by hand and with great attention to detail but also to accommodate the needs of the filming and performance.
Throughout the display duration will be a series of special events inspired by the costumes. Combining a variety of historical fashions described and shown by our two performers, visitors can discover some of the sartorial secrets of the past. There's also children's dressing up and opportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth I's executioner before the end of each display period.
