Free Activities in Lincoln

Celebrate Lincolnshire's local heritage with free entry, tours, and activities in historic attractions across Lincoln city and countryside.

Discover Lincolnshire's rich and varied heritage - Lincolnshire celebrates its archaeology, social history, places and traditions.

Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors FREE access to interesting attractions that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee. It also includes tours, events and activities that focus on and celebrate the local heritage of the area.

Highlights in 2018 include:

Bishop Grosseteste University

An afternoon of talks, tours and exhibits depicting the fascinating history of a women's teacher training college, 1862-1918. Led by academics and graduates of Bishop Grosseteste University.

Talks from 2pm - 3pm, campus tours at 1pm and 3pm, on Friday 14th September.

Cogglesford Watermill, Sleaford

The 18th century watermill in the market town of Sleaford will be open for free on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September from 11:00am - 4:30pm.

A trail will be available for families to follow on both days, and visit on Sunday to see the mill in action.

Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre

Discover the heritage of RAF Cranwell, the world's first Military Air Academy, at Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre.

The museum is open for free on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September from 10:00am - 4:30pm with a fun trail available for families to follow.

Gainsborough Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre is commemorating the English Civil War & the Battle of Gainsborough, Henry VIII's marriage to Katherine Parr and Captain Cook’s first voyage of discovery. Come along and discover Gainsborough's connection with these and other anniversaries.

Open 10am - 4pm on Saturday 8th and 15th, 11am - 4pm on Sunday 9th and 16th of September.

Greyfriars

A rare opportunity to see inside this remarkable internationally important Friary building. Heritage Lincolnshire will be on-hand to share some exciting plans for the future of Greyfriars. 

Sensible footwear advised. Children must be supervised at all times. Access from Freeschool Lane (LN2 1EZ).

Jewish Heritage Guided Tour

A free guided walk giving a short history of the Jews in medieval Lincoln encompassing Castle, Cathedral and the remaining Jewish houses in the city will take place at 1:30pm on Sunday 9th and Saturday 15th September.

Lincoln Castle

Discover the 950 year heritage of Lincoln Castle with free guided tours of the grounds (usually included in the admission price) from Saurday 15th and Sunday 16th September.

Tours are available at various times through the day from 10am to 4pm.

Lincoln Cathedral

Entry to Lincoln Cathedral will be free throughout the day to explore the Nave, the Chapter House, the Cloisters, and more on Saturday 15th September.

Extra upper level tours will be available, providing fantastic views and insight into the Cathedral. Tours admission is £4 per person (minimum 14 yrs) and are bookable in person on the day.

Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum

Free museum admission on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September. The museum workshop will open to visitors, refreshments available and free bus service from Lincoln on Sunday only.

Naviation House, Sleaford

Discover the history of Sleaford and the heritage of the transport and trade industry at this Canal Company office - thought to be the last of its kind in existence.

Navigation House will be open on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September from 11am - 4pm, and there will be a free trail available for families to follow.

St Mary le Wigford Church

This church, with its Saxon tower, is home to the Wigford History Project and houses many fragments from Lincoln's lost churches. It will be open to explore from Thursday 6th - Sunday 9th and Thursday 13th to Sunday 16th September from 10am - 4pm.

There is a free weekend of 700 years of music from 1200 to 1900 played and sung for your enjoyment for the Heritage Music Festival from 11am - 3pm on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September. There will also be a photography exhibition at the church over this weekend.

St Mary's Guildhall

St Mary's Guildhall may be the only survivor of King Henry II's town houses. Guided tours (approx 30 mins) of the Courtyard, not normally open to public, and 'Fosse Way' Roman Road under a glass floor will take place from 10am - 4pm on Saturday 8th September.
