A modern university library found in a converted railway goods warehouse.
The Great Central Warehouse was a railway goods warehouse in use during the 20th century when the area was a busy railway. The warehouse was renovated as part of the University of Lincoln and opened in 2004 as a library, keeping many of the building's original features.
The building was constructed in 1907 by the Great Central Railway but had fallen into disrepair by 1998. Its conversion in 2004 was designed by the Univeristy's in-house team of architects and gained awards for conservation and regeneration from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The library is open daily to University of Lincoln students, staff, and alumni. Visitors can be admitted to the library for reference only or can sign up to become an associate member.
Exhibitions are held often through the year and guided tours are available on special open weekends.
