Scopwick Cemetery, 6 miles south of Lincoln, near Digby aerodrome is the final resting place of ‘The Pilot Poet’, John Gillespie Magee, who was killed in a mid-air collision over Lincolnshire on 11th December 1941.
Magee was just nineteen (19) years old when he was killed whilst serving with 412 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) at RAF Digby and whilst the squadron was dispersed to RAF Wellingore. He wrote the famous airmen’s poem “High Flight”.
