Danesgate and the Ditch

Danesgate and the Ditch

The main Roman road was very steep and has large stone steps along part of its route. The street now called Danesgate was part of an easier route up and down the hill, probably used by carts.

Although much altered and landscaped, you can see parts of the Roman ditch created as part of the bank and wall system to defend the lower city in Temple Gardens. This area now forms part of a public garden next to the Usher Art Gallery.
